Recreational Programs

You’re never too old to have a good time.

At Memorial Gables, good health is synonymous with good times. That’s why enthusiastic activity coordinators plan and implement a variety of daily programs and events—each one designed to stimulate the physical, intellectual, social, or spiritual wellbeing of our residents.

Each month’s activities are posted in a calendar format in each resident’s room and in the community lounges to ensure that residents and family members are aware of upcoming programs.

Fun isn’t forced.

While we encourage all residents to participate, the choice is theirs and often depends on their daily routine and physical ability. Whether it’s a large group activity or a one-on-one activity with a staff member or volunteer, we continually look for the best fit for each resident.

By the way, the play has a purpose here. Participation in each scenario is monitored and recorded so we can routinely assess the total care of each resident.

Physical Activities

We conduct activities that physically stimulate the body at least five days each week. Activities may include, but are not limited to, stretching, muscle strengthening, and relaxation. And activities such as ring toss, bowling, and craft making that encourage interaction and conversation can also improve mobility and circulation.

Intellectual Stimulation

Activities that stimulate thinking and reasoning allow each resident to maintain and even sharpen their cognitive abilities. So programs like book reading, card playing, current event discussions and listening to music are not only fun; a growing body of science shows that engaging in them also contributes to overall health and wellbeing.

Spiritual Offerings

Churches from the local community take turns conducting services at Memorial Gables on Sunday afternoons. Communion is offered monthly and group Bible study is held weekly. Pastoral visits are also available upon request. Some of the local churches offer transportation to their Sunday Worship Service and many clergy make routine visits to commune with church members who reside at Memorial Gables.

Social Interaction

Of all the human needs we’re focused on meeting, it’s the need for interpersonal connection that in one way or another drives everything that happens at Memorial Gables.

For example, intergenerational events like the annual Gables Fair, Halloween Trick-Or-Treat, and the Easter Egg Hunt bring in youth from the surrounding area. The fall Hot Dog Roast & Hayride and spring golf cart rides around Green Pastures take everyone outside for a breath of fresh air as the seasons change. And residents can watch the brilliance of the fireworks rising from the nearby Union County fairgrounds on special holidays.

With decades of event experience to draw from, we know that whether it’s a spontaneous gathering in a lounge or an outing that requires weeks of planning, what matters most is bringing people together.

Sense of Belonging

New residents are asked to complete an "Interest Assessment" so residents with like interests can be introduced to one another and new friendships nurtured. This also allows the staff to make any adjustments as our resident community evolves and interests change.
