Memorial Hospital Named a Gold Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association

Memorial Hospital of Union County was recently named a Gold Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association (AHA) for the fifth consecutive year.

As a Gold level award recipient, Memorial Hospital has recognized how important a healthy workplace is, as well as implemented programs, education, and support for employees to create a culture of wellness.

According to the AHA, Americans spend an average of 47 hours per week at work, more than 164 more hours per year than just a generation ago. Added to the mix is the increase in sedentary jobs, raising 83 percent since 1950. When you take into account how many American workers spend the majority of their time in an inactive setting, it solidifies the importance of focusing on healthy habits and lifestyle choices.

Studies have found that promoting a culture of wellness and implementing a physical activity program in the workplace provides many benefits, including:

  • Increased productivity
  • Reduced absenteeism
  • Lowered turnover
  • Reduced healthcare costs

“We value the health and well being of our employees as much as we do the patients we serve,” shares Deb Stubbs, Health Center Director at Memorial Hospital. “For over 15 years we have focused efforts on helping our employees live healthy lives through programming and support.”

To help keep employees healthy, Memorial Hospital maintains a strong workplace wellness program, called Working on Wellness, to educate, engage, and motivate employees to make healthy choices at work and in their personal lives. Free educational classes are offered, all employees receive a free membership to an on-site fitness facility, and a variety of activities are offered throughout the year, such as the Walk With a Doc program, a seasonal on-site farmer’s market, and fun weight loss challenges.

In order to receive gold level recognition, worksites must fulfill specific criteria, including offering employees physical activity support, increasing healthy eating options at work, promoting a wellness culture, and implementing activities for employees.
