    The Law Says You Can Carry Concealed, But Not At Memorial Hospital or The Gables

    With Ohio's new concealed carry law taking effect April 8th individuals with a license are permitted to carry concealed handguns. The law does provide for exceptions to the law, specifically stating that concealed handguns are prohibited in law enforcement offices, airports, churches, schools, and day care centers among others. It also specifically prohibits them in "buildings owned or leased by Ohio or any political subdivision of Ohio." So while hospitals and long-term care facilities, in general, are not listed as an exception, Memorial Hospital and The Gables, as county facilities, are covered. To reinforce the exception, Memorial has developed a policy to comply with the law. Signs clearly stating the prohibition will be posted in conspicuous locations alerting patients, visitors, employees, volunteers, medical staff and vendors. The only individuals permitted to carry a firearm on hospital premises are law enforcement officers.     The Memorial Hospital of Union County Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the hiring of Olas (Chip) A. Hubbs III as its new president and Chief Executive Officer. Following a five-month national search, the Board of Trustees is very pleased with its outcome. Ann Allen, Chair of the board states, "While we were fortunate to interview many outstanding candidates, we felt that Chip best matched the combination of leadership, competence, interactive skills, work ethic, energy level, and service orientation that we sought.     Smoking Cessation Program Offered at Memorial Hospital

    The Health Center at Memorial Hospital of Union County and the Union County Health Department have partnered to form a smoking cessation program. Funds from a grant from the Tobacco Use, Prevention and Control Foundation allow this program to be offered for a fee of only $25.

    Memorial Hospital and UnitedHealthcare Sign New Multi-year Contract

    Memorial Hospital of Union County and UnitedHealthcare of Ohio have entered into a multi-year contract, effective December 1, 2003, enabling local enrollees to continue to receive their healthcare services at the hospital. The two organizations had been negotiating the new contract for several months, with the goal of reaching agreement prior to the termination deadline of their original contract. The parties reached agreement last week.
