Health & Wellness
Tuesday, May 26, started like any other day for Michael Goin. Retired life meant a comfortable routine: dropping his wife, Sandy, off at her therapy appointment with Memorial Therapy & Rehabilitation at the City Gate Medical Center, then heading to one of his favorite fitness centers for a workout.
That morning, he chose the Wellness Center at Memorial Hospital – a decision he never imagined would save his life.
After about 45 minutes of weightlifting, Michael moved to the treadmill to finish his workout. As he walked, he suddenly began feeling shaky and dizzy. Realizing something was wrong, he reached for the STOP button.
Before he could react further, he collapsed.
Immediately springing into action were Exercise Physiologists Arthur West and Margot Widdis, members of the Wellness Center team. Arthur and Margot quickly began CPR on Michael while other staff members sounded the “Code Blue” alarm – a “Batman-type” code that calls for members of our emergency response team to respond.
Dr. Michael Wert was the first physician on the scene and immediately deployed the automated external defibrillator (AED). After a single shock, Michael regained consciousness and was prepared for transport to the Memorial Emergency Department.
There, the emergency team quickly determined that Michael had experienced ventricular fibrillation (VFib), the most common life-threatening heart rhythm disturbance.
Michael was then transferred to the Memorial Cardiac Cath Lab, where physicians discovered a blockage involving a stent that had originally been placed more than 27 years ago. The team successfully inserted a new stent to restore blood flow and reduce his risk of future cardiac arrhythmias.
Following the procedure, Michael was admitted to the inpatient unit for recovery and observation. Just two days later, he was well enough to return to his home in Marysville.
Michael understands the importance of heart health better than most. Having managed cardiac issues for much of his life, he knows firsthand the value of regular exercise, healthy nutrition, and a trusted cardiology team.
He is equally passionate about recognizing the care he received.
“I’ve been in and out of a lot of hospitals over the years,” Michael said. “Memorial is by far the best care experience I’ve ever had. Every single person at Memorial provided warm, family-oriented, expert care. It was truly world-class. Every morning, I wake up and feel blessed by God.”
Michael’s story is a powerful reminder of how every part of a healthcare system works together – from Wellness Center staff and emergency responders to physicians, nurses, and rehabilitation teams – to save lives.
Thanks to the quick actions, expertise, and teamwork of countless caregivers, what began as an ordinary workout ended with an extraordinary outcome.
Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all the team members who played a role in Michael’s remarkable recovery!
